On February 24th Russia launched a full-scale attack on its neighbor, Ukraine.
We at SAMA Seattle have been watching the evolving situation with a feeling of helplessness and a sense of deep sadness for the people of Ukraine.
We recently posted a video interview with the Kyiv-based ensemble Dakh Daughters who have brought so much joy to our audience with their heartfelt and witty performances.
Kyiv is a vibrant artistic town so many performers play in various groups, and Ruslana Hazipova and Anna Nikitina of Dakh Daughters are also part of the band Ragapop with Producer and Musician Anton Ocheretyanyy.
This week, SAMA Seattle's co-founder, Darek Mazzone, was able to talk to Anna and Anton in Kyiv as the curfew was in effect and the news of the Russian military column was in the news.
Anna created a powerful music piece about her situation and other Ukrainians, and Anton spoke about the reality of everyone helping to give hope in such dark times.
Ragapop’s song “Gordosti”, which is a timely piece on tyrants worldwide, finishes the interview.
These are people living in harrowing times and one of the few things we can do is center their voices and shine a light so we all can see and bear witness.
