STORYLINE:
Youths set cars alight and pelted police with stones, bottles and fireworks on Thursday night in a Berlin neighbourhood famed for its May Day clashes.
Earlier in the day, some five thousand protesters staged a peaceful march in support of a variety of leftist causes.
But scuffles between riot police and masked rioters began around dusk in the western Kreuzberg district.
Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse troublemakers.
Several vehicles were set alight and the emergency services used water canons to extinguish the fires.
Other cars were overturned or had their windows broken.
The violence in Kreuzberg, where May Day protests have been marked by violence every year since 1987, followed scuffles on Wednesday night elsewhere in the capital that resulted in more than 100 arrests.
There was no immediate word on how many people were detained on Thursday.
