Umrao Jaan (2006) is a period musical romantic drama film directed by J. P. Dutta. The film stars Aishwarya Rai as Umrao Jaan, Abhishek Bachchan as Nawab Sultan Khan, Shabana Azmi as Khannum Jaan, Sunil Shetty as Faiz Ali, Divya Dutta as Bismillah, Himani Shivpuri as Bua Hussaini, Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Maulvi Sahib, Ayesha Jhulka as Khurshid, Puru Raaj Kumar as Gauhar Mirza, Vishwajeet Pradhan as Dilawar Khan.
The film is based on the Urdu novel "Umrao Jaan Ada" by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. It tells the story of Umrao Jaan, a renowned courtesan of Lucknow, who is kidnapped as a child and trained in the arts of singing and dancing. As she grows up, she becomes a celebrated beauty and poet, capturing the heart of Nawab Sultan Khan. Their romance faces challenges due to societal norms and misunderstandings.
