Democratic Republic of Congo's Felix Tshisekedi, took the oath of office in what becomes the country's first peaceful transfer of power in nearly 60 years. He takes over from Joseph Kabila who has been in power since 2001.
Out of the 17 African Heads of State who had been invited, only Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta attended the inauguration held in the capital, Kinshasa. The African Union had earlier expressed its reservations over the credibility of the polls and alleged likely fraud.
