A typical structural analysis involves applying a known force or weight and testing a design for a stress-induced failure. The reverse is also possible, where a known or expected displacement can be applied to a body to see what force is required to achieve it. In this example, an extremely heavy and rigid piece of equipment is to rest on rails, but a slightly thicker wooden block sits between the rails. By applying a prescribed displacement on the equipment, we can check to see what reaction force would be applied if it were deformed completely.

Note that this study could have been run on just the wooden block, or in a linear study. There are several ways to approach this and this is only illustrative of one possible approach.
