The Positive Crankcase Ventilation system is essential for the healthy functioning of the engine. It allows the engine to eliminate excess crankcase gases and oil that could otherwise foul or damage the engine. This video describes how the PCV system works in the 1zz-FE and 2zz-GE 1.8-liter engines found in Toyota MR2 Spyder, Celica, Corolla, Matrix, Pontiac Vibe, and Lotus Elise. The PCV valve, PCV hose and crankcase breather or vent hose and their pathways from the valve cover to the throttle body and intake plenum and their corresponding airflows are identified and described. We explore the consequences of cracked or loose hoses leading to vacuum leaks and Check Engine Light (CEL) due to un-metered air entering the cylinders without being measured by the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and being detected by the Oxygen (O2) sensors.
