Today, the House of Representatives voted on a bill I was proud to lead with my friend and colleague, Rep. Ilhan Omar. The bill would require the United States to take action to combat Islamophobia around the world. It would require the State Department to create a Special Envoy for monitoring and combating Islamophobia and requiring it to include state-sponsored Islamophobic violence in the Department’s annual human rights record.
Sadly, Islamophobia is on the rise in America: with nearly 70 percent of American Muslims reporting having personally experienced instances of anti-Muslim hate and thousands of acts of anti-Muslim bigotry and violence recorded each year. Islamophobia is a global phenomenon – with violence perpetrated from the genocide against the Uyghurs, to atrocities against the Rohinga people in Burma, to attacks on Muslim refugees in central Europe and white supremacist violence targeting Muslims in New Zealand and Canada, to targeting of Muslim minority communities in Western Asia.
