RDVideo - 1991 NCHA World Championship Futurity - When Greg Welch and Little Tenina marked 224 to win the 1991 NCHA Futurity for Dan and Sallee Craine, it made the sixth time a Welch had won the storied event. Greg’s dad, Buster, had five earlier titles to his credit.
“This has been a dream of mine since 1962,” said Welch, who had watched Buster win the first Futurity on Money’s Glo. One of the elder Welch’s wins had been on Little Tenina’s sire, Peppy San Badger, in 1977.
Bred by King Ranch, Little Tenina was a three-quarter brother to Tenino San, the 1982 World Champion under Greg Welch. The Craines bought her for $35,000 out of the 1990 Atwood Ranch sale on Welch’s advice.
After the Futurity, Little Tenina won 10 more major events and earned $385,000.
