The unique vineyards of La Geria on Lanzarote are a place that you have to visit when you are on Lanzarote. 🇪🇸 They are a fantastic place for hiking and exploration. These vineyards are the product of an ingenious method of cultivation in a volcanic landscape.
Lanzarote has an arid desert climate, and since the large eruptions of the volcanoes in 1730, it has been largely covered by non-fertile volcanic material. The land where farmers used to grow crops suddenly became unusable, requiring resourcefulness from the farmers. They decided to grow wine here. However, the vines needed much more water than was available, the soil was covered by a thick layer of volcanic material, and the harsh winds on the island made this seem an unlikely place for vineyards. The agricultural methods used here have turned this impossible environment into thriving vineyards.
You can freely walk through this surreal place and stop at one of the wineries on your tour to taste the wine or go on a guided tour through the vineyards. You can easily reach it by taking a bus to Uga from Puerto del Carmen or Arrecife.
