If you're shopping for a tractor grapple, or root grapple, there are a few things you should be aware of so you get the right one for your tractor.
First, there are two styles you can choose when selecting a grapple bucket for a tractor. The first has long forks that go under the brush and then one or two grapples clamp down on the load. The other type looks more like a clam shell, with short teeth and is a grapple "rake" and doesn't rely on getting under the brush to move it. I like both designs but slightly prefer the root rake one in the video because it seems to string fewer sticks when you're raking with it and it takes up less space in the barn. Having said that, I'd be happy with either design.
Here are a few rules to keep in mind to select the best tractor grapple. Especially when buying a compact tractor grapple, make sure the total weight of the whole thing doesn't equal more than half of your tractor's lift capacity. Also, the width to get the right root rake for your tractor may not be as important as you think. You want your loader bucket wider than the front wheels of the tractor, brush is going to stick out and be clamped in the middle, so getting a narrow root rake grapple may save money and keep the weight off the front end of a smaller tractor. Finally, you may be happy and save money getting just a single grapple on the brush rake for tractor you get. Two are better, but one will move a lot of brush and save weight and money.
