This is an example of the warm-up materials that the Allegro Training Orchestra uses in their rehearsals. Similar to the style used by the more advanced Allegro groups, this one utilizes a fair amount of repetition to emphasize tonality and ensemble playing. In this video, you will hear the scale along with two additional versions of the scale which can all be combined to create a three-part ensemble. This is followed by arpeggios which then concludes with a D Major Round. This is also rehearsed in the keys of C, G, and F.
I have found that students tend to think of practicing scales as going up and down once. What I try to introduce in this material is a way of repeating the materials through variations. This method should create enough variation while exercising the same material. Soon, the students will be introduced to a two-octave scale that once mastered leads them through a thirteen-variation scale warm-up with arpeggios. Once they get through that, I am fairly confident that they are beginning to understand the scale.
