Mayotte hasn’t seen a cyclone of this intensity since 1934. It hit the island as a category 4 and reached category 5 at its peak intensity, with winds of over 226 km/h and waves over 6 meters high, damaging houses, government buildings, hospitals, and infrastructure. It was the strongest storm in more than 90 years to hit the island.

According to meteorologists, it started out as a relatively small cyclone north of Madagascar and then quickly intensified before reaching the archipelago of Mayotte. The eye of the cyclone passed through the island, following an unusual trajectory.
