Conflict resolution exert Jeremy Pollack Breaks down the often overlooked differences between conflict resolution, conflict management and transformation.
YouTube Title: Conflict Management, Conflict Resolution, and Conflict Transformation: What’s the Difference?
What's the difference between conflict resolution, conflict management, and conflict transformation? These terms are often used interchangeably by people but it's important to understand the difference between these various approaches because each particular conflict, depending on the nature of that conflict, requires a different approach. Conflict resolution Is typically appropriate when there are clearly identifiable parties in a conflict and there are clear potential solutions. We often call this an acute conflict. Conflict management however is warranted when there are clearly identifiable parties but there is no clear solution. In these cases we simply have to manage the conflict, which we acknowledge has no clear end date. Managing a conflict means we identify all the potential risks or worst case scenarios stemming from this conflict, and we do our best to put things in place to mitigate those risks. We also determine the potential best case scenarios of this ongoing conflict, and we try to capitalize on or encourage opportunities to realize those best case scenarios. And finally conflict transformation is really about addressing both the acute conflicts and the wider systems, structures, or culture that allows such conflicts to emerge. So in transformation, this often means we enact conflict resolution in particular acute conflicts, we manage other unsolvable conflicts, and we simultaneously look at changing components of the larger system or culture surrounding those conflicts. Over time, the goal is eventually for fewer and fewer conflicts to emerge within the system. For more on conflict theory and psychology, visit us at pollackpeacebuilding.com.
