Golu is the festive display of dolls in a South Indian tradition. It is celebrated during the festive season of Navaratri which falls between September – October every year following the autumn equinox. These displays narrate a wide variety of scenes from epics, Puranas, village life, folklore, and various characters from Indian mythology. They are also known as Kolu, Gombe Habba, Bommai Kolu, or Bommala Koluvu in different parts of south India.
Each displayed item in a golu display is called a golu doll. These are typically made by rural artisans from clay and wooden materials and painted in bright colors. They are usually arranged in an odd number of padis (tiers) to tell a story. Golu is a festive occasion where families visit each other with an exchange of prasadam and gifts over the display of dolls and sing devotional songs together.
In this video , we will explore the origin of Golu.
