It’s Monday morning, September 11, 2023, aboard the upper level of a Superliner coach on Amtrak train 3, the westbound Southwest Chief, on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Raton Subdivision.
We climb the east slope of Raton Pass, from west of Trinidad, Colorado through Wooton, Colorado and through the tunnel at the summit of Raton Pass.
Amazingly, the east slope of Raton Pass is still double track even though only Amtrak’s Southwest Chief in each direction are the only trains traversing this section of railroad!
