The Inspiring stories of the lives and deaths of Paul, Polycarp, and More: The Persecution of Christians in ancient Rome. Paul was a Jewish leader and early Christian evangelist who was known for his zeal and dedication to his faith. He had a conversion experience in which he encountered the risen Jesus and became an advocate for Christianity. There are accounts of Paul being imprisoned and eventually executed by Nero, though the exact circumstances are not certain. Emperor Marcus Aurelius was known for his persecution of Christians, who were often tortured and killed in public spectacles. One notable Christian martyr was Polycarp, a direct disciple of the apostle John, who was burned at the stake but miraculously not harmed by the flames, and later stabbed to death. Perpetua and Felicity were two women arrested for being Christian, and while in prison, Perpetua had a dream in which she climbed a ladder to heaven. Perpetua and the others were eventually sentenced to be thrown to wild animals in the arena, but both women remained steadfast in their faith until the end.
