The 3GS21B Genset was developed by National Railway Equipment Company in the early 2000s. Production began in 2006 and continues to this day. They are low-emissions diesel locomotives powered by 3 Cummins diesel engines, each producing 700 horsepower. In the interest of increasing fuel economy and lowering emissions, each diesel engine can be turned on and off as power is needed.
Another point of interest is the modular construction. If an engine fails, it can be swapped out with minimal effort and not impact the operation of the other engines on board. In addition, the diesel engines used are common in non-railway applications such as semi-trucks allowing greater parts and service availability.
A total of 182 have been built. CSX, BNSF and Union Pacific are the largest buyers. Many smaller companies also purchased the locomotive such as the US Army, California Northern and Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Norfolk Southern purchased 2. Having no NS locomotives in my collection, I felt it was time to change that!
MTH announced another production run of their highly-detailed version in 2022 and they just released these to stores in past weeks. Equipped with ProtoSound 3.0, they retail for $560.
