i24NEWS DESK | Ayelet Shaked stands as the party leader for the New Right, but is she one of the few women represented in Israel's parliament? Our Owen Alterman has the story.
Story (related):
In a joint press conference with Israel's current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Chairman of the right-wing libertarian Zehut Party Moshe Feiglin announced that his party would not run in the upcoming general election in September, as part of a deal that could see him assume a ministerial position in the next government and
The deal will also reportedly guarantee measures to ease restrictions on cannabis for those in need of medical care.
“When the [cannabis] market is not open for import, it is subject to the manipulations of a cartel. There are always shortages and therefore high prices,” Netanyahu explained.
The premier assured that Feiglin’s decision to withdraw from the election race would save Zehut votes from going to waste by failing to reach the 3.25% threshold required to have seats in Israel's parliament (Knesset).
Zehut has failed to meet the threshold in recent elections or in any of the latest polls.
Feiglin cheered the cannabis reform, calling it a "life-saving revolution."
“As you well know, I made a promise Zehut would run in this [election] round even though no one could have predicted this important opportunity. I feel a moral obligation to bring this deal for approval from all of you through an organized survey of party members," Feiglin said in an appeal to his party.
