My daughter was slightly hysterical after my wife pointed to a snake in the garden...
It turned out to be a grass snake, a nonvenomous variety and the UK's largest reptile. They are usually very difficult to spot - I had never seen one before - but this one decided to come out of the bushes and onto the lawn.
Since our garden borders onto some open fields and grassland with a small stream nearby it makes an ideal habitat for this animal.
