STORYLINE:
Environmental activists from Greenpeace used Valentine's Day as an opportunity to share with Japanese officials their strong feelings on whaling when they gathered outside the Japanese embassy in Moscow on Wednesday.
In a Valentine message written on signs being carried by banners, around 25 activists declared, "We love Japan, but whaling breaks our hearts."
"We came here to the Japanese embassy to say that we love Japan", said event coordinator Dmitry Kuznetsov.
"But we don't like whaling, we ask Japan to stop scientific whaling in the Southern Ocean whale reserve, where all countries try to protect whales, to save them, to give them the opportunity to live," he said.
Greenpeace's Valentine campaign was repeated around the world on Wednesday with Japanese diplomatic staff in 20 other countries - including France, Germany, New Zealand, Spain and the United States - all receiving giant cards bearing the organisation's anti-whaling message.
