(9 Nov 2019) Hundreds of Catalan independence supporters gathered in Barcelona on Saturday, on the eve of the Spanish national elections.
They called for freedom for jailed separatist political leaders and demanded an official referendum on independence.
The day before elections is normally a so-called 'reflection' day where public political events or demonstrations that can influence voters are forbidden.
But the online grassroots separatist group Tsunami Democratic called people to the streets and organised an afternoon of cultural activities with music, poetry and dancing by local artists in Barcelona and other towns in the northeastern region of Catalonia to bring attention to the movement's plight.
Spain is back at the polls for the fourth time in four years with violence linked to Catalonia's regional secession push and a predicted surge in Spain's nascent far-right party dominating the election campaign.
The first obstacle for whoever wins Sunday's vote will be to overcome the country's increasingly fragmented and polarised politics to build a parliamentary majority to back a government.
