Delhi, with its rich history, has been associated with several cities over the centuries. Among them is Purana Qila, and as its name suggests, this is one of India’s oldest forts!
As per Hindu religious beliefs, it is said to be the site of Indraprastha, the capital of the Pandavas.
Interestingly, as late as the early 20th century, a village named Indarpat stood here.
The present structure of the Purana Qila dates back to the 16th century and was built by the second Mughal Emperor Humayun as his new capital.
The fort complex consists of notable structures like the Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque - with a large dome and towering arches, the Sher Mandal, a two-story octagonal tower which served as Humayun's personal library.
Purana Qila’s formidable stone walls and towers have witnessed the ebb and flow of dynasties, surviving the test of time to become an iconic landmark in the heart of Delhi today.
