The tree produces seeds as well as being able to form extensive clones through its root system pushing up new stems. The well known Scottish name 'Waverley' means 'Meadow of quivering Aspen'.
An Aspen grove in Utah USA is connected by a single root system, and each stem above the ground is genetically identical. It is estimated to weigh approximately 6,000,000 kg and covers 0.43 km² (106 acres) making it arguably the world's largest single organism.
