If you already run Octoprint, you might find it a hassle to slice in separate software and then upload the gcode to the pi. In this guide, I take you step by step through setting up the pre-installed CuraEngine, installing Slic3rEngine via SSH and Putty, as well as the Full Featured Slicer plugin so you can manipulate your STLs with a GUI.
The slic3r install is not straightforward, so the step by step is down below.
Many people will be happy with their current slicing workflow, so this video will act as little more than food for thought. Personally, I will be implementing this setup to make 3D printing easier for my colleagues at work with a Prusa MK3.

Step by step recap of what is in this video, tweaked to be more efficient than what I showcased:
CuraEngine
1. Setup and export Cura profile as .ini from Cura 15.04.x
2. Import ini profile into Cura Engine plugin.
3. Upload an STL and Slice.
Slic3r
1. Install slic3r from plugin manager. Restart when prompted.
2. Open putty and connect to your pi via ssh with its IP address.
3. Change default admin password if you haven’t already using command: passwd
4. Select home directory: cd /home
5. Open blank file for script from slic3r plugin page: sudo nano slic3r_install.sh
6. Copy script from plugin page and then right click in putty to paste.
7. Save file: control + O then enter
8. Exit nano: control + X
9. Make new file executable: sudo chmod +x slic3r_install.sh
10. Install dependency: sudo apt-get install cpanminus
11. Run script: ./slic3r_install.sh
12. When prompted, enter version as: 1.1.7
13. Install takes 20-30 minutes). Assuming a successful install (it will say PASS near the bottom), set path to slic3rEngine in octoprint slic3r plugin settings: /home/pi/Slic3r/slic3r.pl
14. Click ‘test’, fingers crossed it says successful.
15. Setup and export Slic3r profile as /ini from Slic3r (I used the newer 1.2.9).
16. Import ini profile into Slic3r plugin.
17. Upload an STL and slice.
Full featured slicer (GUI)
1. Search for ‘slicer’ (not ‘slic3r’) in the plugin manager and install. 2. Restart when prompted.
3. Now when you upload an STL file it will switch to this tab. Alternatively you can slice the magic wand icon ‘slice’ button that will now appear under STL files.
