Italians can easily tell who is Italian and who isn’t. Here’s how:
FASHION: Italians tend to follow fashion trends and you can easily notice that some clothing items are worn by lots of people. Italians do not dress according to the weather, but according to the season. For example, shorts are only worn during summer but definitely not in autumn and winter. So if you’re walking around Italy in shorts and flip-flops in winter, it’s quite easy to tell you’re not Italian!
HAIRSTYLES: Italians can recognize who’s Italian and who’s not by the hairstyle too. Of course, every year there are new fashion trends but Italians tend to follow them. For women, it’s very common to get highlights to make the hair color brighter!
TALKING WITH HANDS: hand gestures are basically another way of communicating in Italy. About 250 hand gestures have been identified and many of them are commonly used. So, if you’re not talking with your hands as well, you are surely a foreigner.
HAVING LUNCH OR DINNER AT UNUSUAL TIMES: Italians love routines and usually eat at the same times every day. Lunch is typically between 12.30-2 pm and dinner is between 7.30-9 pm, but that depends on the Italian region.
HOW YOU WALK: you’ll find it hard to believe, but the walking style can tell a lot! Italians are generally laid-back people and they love strolling. Going for a walk in Italy is a common activity and there’s no need to rush.
SAYING HELLO WHEN YOU GO INTO A SHOP: it’s extremely common to go into a shop and say “buongiorno - good morning” or “buonasera - good evening” and also “arrivederci - goodbye” when leaving. If you don’t do it, the shop assistants will probably know that you are not Italian!
