Dr. Vanessa Kronzer, a Clinician Investigator Fellow in Rheumatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, shares results of her study appearing in the December 2019 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings. This study found that having certain conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, and venous thromboembolism might predispose to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) development, while cardiovascular disease, venous thromboembolism, and sleep apnea may result from RA. Clinicians should have a heightened suspicion for RA in patients with other autoimmune diseases and should have a low threshold to screen for heart disease, venous thromboembolism, and sleep apnea in patients who already have RA.
