Can you own a tank and how much do they cost?

You may think only the military can own vehicles such as tanks, fighter jets or warthogs but that’s simply not true.

In fact the man, the myth, the legend, Arnold Schwarzenegger is a proud owner of a 1951 M-47 Patton tank that was gifted to him by the Austrian Government.

So how do you or I buy one of these things? Well the internet of course, there’s a whole website dedicated to it called tanks-alot.co.uk , it’s basically the gumtree of military vehicles that range hugelly in price.

For example you could pick up this 52 ton Centurion AVRE Fosgene featured on a channel 4 show for £170,000 or go with an armored personnel carrier for the price of a new VW Golf.

This may seem like a bit of a joke but you can actually drive these things on the road as long as you have a CAT H driving license, replace the tracks of a tank with rubber ones and most importantly deactivate any weapons onboard. Most are even MOT and road tax exempt due to their age.

However, before you purchase on as your first motor, keep in mind the fuel costs will be astronomical. Eddie Hall, professional strong man, took his tank to the petrol station and walked out over £900 poorer and that was with 60L already in the tank.
