"The House Is Haunted (By the Echo of Your Last Goodbye)" the original music was written by Billy Rose and lyrics and Basil Adlam in 1934. It was first released by Paul Whiteman with the Park Avenue Boys in 1934.
The lyrics convey themes of longing and haunting memories, with the refrain focusing on the haunting presence of a past love's goodbye. The song encapsulates the feeling of being surrounded by reminders of a lost love, with lines like "The house is haunted by the echo of your last goodbye" and "I wonder who's kissing you now?" being particularly evocative.
Cultural Impact: The song has maintained a presence in the music world, appearing in various formats over the decades, from original 78 rpm recordings to modern digital releases. Its melancholic melody and poignant lyrics have made it a staple in the repertoire of jazz and torch song performances.
This is a special Concert Arrangement for The Jack Hylton Dance Orchestra. Transcribed and arranged from the original band parts. It is unclear if this version was ever recorded by Hylton and the Orchestra. The Vocal refrain has been given to a solo violin by the editor (I didn't have a vocalist available to 'mix' at the time of recording).
Editor acknowledgement. I was alerted to 'The House Is Haunted' for the first time only a couple of months ago after listening to the hypnotic version by 'San Lyon'. Please check out their recording of this wonderful song.
