‘I lay the bottom stone and you, Mr Bowes, will lay the top stone.’ So said Joséphine Bowes to her husband, John 150 years ago today whilst laying the first stone of the Museum’s foundations. In an intimate ceremony on Saturday, November 27, 1869, the Museum build started. Dr Jane Whittaker, Head of Collections and Dr Howard Coutts talk more about this impressive milestone and how John, Joséphine and their guests celebrated the event.
