Lavrov: Russia has turned tide in Syria
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says his country’s actions in Syria “have helped to turn the tide” in the war there. He says that, thanks to Russia’s involvement, a clearer picture of what is happening politically and on the ground has emerged. He said: “It has become clear who is fighting the terrorists, who is acting as their accomplices, who tries to use them for their unilateral, selfish goals.”
Vote on law to seize refugees’ valuables
The Danish parliament is set to vote on a controversial bill authorising the seizure of asylum seekers’ cash and valuables. Some Danish lawmakers want refugees to be forced to help pay towards the cost of them staying in the country, while applying for asylum. Money and items above $14-hundred and fifty dollars could be confiscated, while refugees would be allowed to keep possessions of sentimental value. The United Nations has warned the Danish government that the proposed law “could fuel fear and xenophobia”. The government has defended the proposal, saying the same rules apply to Danes on welfare.
Syria peace talks to begin on Friday
The United Nations envoy for Syria says talks aimed at ending Syria’s five-year war will begin on Friday. They had been delayed because of disagreements over who would represent the opposition. Staffan de Mistura did not say who would be invited, but said the talks would be “as inclusive as possible.” US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Saudi counterpart Adel al-Jubeir said they had provided the necessary conditions for “proximity talks” in Geneva. The talks are due to last six months and take place simultaneously, but not directly, between opposing sides.
