This video discusses Grigori Kozintsev's 1970/71 film Korol Lir, which adapts Shakespeare's King Lear through a socialist realism lens. In particularly I'm interested in the number of people--poor people, that is--in Kozintsev's film, and what that exposes about King Lear. Shakespeare's version focuses principle on the aristocracy, but Kozintsev's film reminds us that the devastating war in the play would have had mush broader social consequences.
