(25 Apr 2018) ATTORNEY GLORIA ALLRED: COSBY VERDICT, FIRST TEST SINCE #METOO
Attorney Gloria Allred says the verdict in Bill Cosby's sexual assault case, which jurors are currently deliberating, will be the "first test since the #MeToo Movement."
Allred and actress Lili Bernard spoke to the media before heading inside the courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania on Wednesday.
Bernard told cameras she hopes the jury makes a decision "that will land them on the right side of history," and that she would be "devastated" if there was a not guilty verdict. But she also said she's hopeful.
Deliberating jurors in the case asked their first question of the judge on Wednesday, regarding the legal definition of consent.
Judge Steve O'Neill said he wasn't able to answer it, telling jurors they've already been given the definitions of the charges they are considering.
Prosecutors say the 80-year-old comedian drugged and molested a woman at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004.
His lawyers say Cosby's encounter with Andrea Constand was consensual. The defense says Constand falsely accused Cosby so she could file suit against him. Cosby paid Constand nearly $3.4 million in 2006.
Allred, who represents 33 victims accusing Cosby of sexual assault, said Cosby's defense team gave a low blow during closing arguments, and that had those comments been made outside a courtroom, the group could've been sued for defamation.
"This is going to be the first answer to my question which is, how many women does it take before one woman is believed over the denial of a rich, powerful, famous man?" she said.
Cosby's first trial ended without a verdict after jurors deadlocked.
