The Qosh Tepa Canal, also known as the Qush Tepa Canal, is an ambitious project underway in northern Afghanistan. This canal aims to divert water from the Amu Darya, extending 285 km to transform 550,000 hectares of desert into fertile farmland. Starting in Balkh Province and ending in Faryab, it passes through Jowzjan.
Initiated by the Taliban-run government in early 2022, the canal is a top priority. By February 2023, over 100 km had been excavated, and the first phase concluded in October 2023, with the second phase following immediately. Despite the progress, experts express skepticism about the project due to concerns over the government's capability and the rudimentary construction methods used. In December 2023, a significant breach occurred, with satellite images revealing a large water body forming near the collapsed embankment.
