My vehicle was shipped from Ottawa to Toronto by truck, then on to Vancouver via rail. To move a vehicle across the country, this is the most cost effective way. Driving myself that same distance takes at least 46 hours non-stop, which means four or five days of driving, hotels, food, rest breaks, and fuel. I chose to ship my vehicle since it had low mileage and it was paid for, plus I can claim the cost as a tax deduction.
It takes approximately 8 days for the rail car to make its way across the country, depending on freight traffic. It travels through Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Banff, the Spiral Tunnels of Kicking Horse Pass, the 14km Mount MacDonald Tunnel in Rogers Pass, Revelstoke, Kamloops, Coquitlam, and then to Delta.
