How Do You Find a Good Ayahuasca Retreat? Is it Worth Going to the Amazon?
There are many kinds of Medicine. In each region, in each Tribe, there was a way of connecting with The Force, or Creator. It evolved daily as a Living Thing. Speaking with many different experts in Consciousness, I begin to see a pattern emerging though, and I'd like to share.
The one Major Key that keeps coming up again and again is that we need to learn to focus our Consciousness, and this is done by Increasing Personal Power (Energy-Force) and using your Awareness to direct it (Attention-Form).
“Dieta”
One example of this formula of Attention and Energy in action, is in the case of the Ayahuasca Foundation, is the plant Dieta. When one ingests a plant substance, unless there is a Conscious connection made with the spirit entity within, the teacher, in each plant, the results will be less ideal. The best way to make a relationship with this plant ally is to consider it a trusted friend who you are making a contract with, and who has feelings and personality. It has qualities and powers, but once you begin working with it, one must follow through with their commitment and contract.
I spent some serious time with my Elder afterwards, working on and feeling through our traditions, making an inventory so to speak of our knowledge, purpose and traditions. Hearing about the Ayahuasca Foundation and Tanner’s work was a very provoking list of questions about the nature of our work.
Do we have more in common than apart? Are we all operating under the same banner?
The Crossroads and Hybrid Shamanism
What I learned in the 7 years I studied with Don Patricio Dominguez was that a Shaman should have diverse skill sets that cover the needs of the community, and the flexibility and intelligence to learn new things when called upon. Carlos remarked that any system has to be that way, and that his tradition also was a living thing. Though in the past things didn’t change quite as quickly as they are changing in modern times.
It seemed like a very strange idea to Carlos that we would be using Medicine from so far away. Didn’t our Ancestors have anything good here? Yes, Peyote, Datura, and much more...But Ayahuasca is what everyone is looking for and if they don’t get it here, they will get it somewhere else.
Plant Spirits: DMT vs. Ayahuasca
My Teacher, now I call him Tata Dominguez, was part of the DMT Trials at UNM, which was then turned into a Book and a Movie called Spirit Molecule. He then went on to organize 3 International Intertribal Councils of Shamans and Chiefs. Together with Tata Eric he travelled North, Central and South America in search of other Native Elders. They came back and began a relationship with those Taitas and had them come and seve medicine here in the US.

Conclusion: Each different person should choose a high quality Journey that is unique to their path. The Ayahuasca Foundation is a frontrunner in this kind of therapy, and you will have to set aside time and money. Local mini-retreats are powerful and require more personal accountability and return to Ceremony. Both have their place and we should work together to provide support to healing.
Recommendation: Ask critical questions about your practitioners qualifications. Commit to your own journey the way you commit to loving relationships. This building of friendship with yourself, your high power and your community is key and requires serious effort. www.FindingTheForce.com
