Prince and The Revolution · Dream Factory
| 1986
Full album · rearranged and edited by Purple Legacy Music
In December 1985, Prince recorded the track "Dream Factory", which would become the title track for the unreleased Prince and The Revolution album of the same name. Recording for the album started March 1986 at his new Galpin Blvd Home Studio, with the first version of the album, which contained 11 tracks, being completed in April 1986. After additional recording, the album was expanded to a double LP with 19 tracks in June 1986. Up until that point, 'Dream Factory' was a very collaborative effort that featured a lot of creative input by The Revolution, something that would change during the next month. With further work on the album and new recordings being made, a last configuration was compiled in July 1986, which replaced some band performances with solo recordings by Prince. The change in direction was symbolic for the fate of both the album and the band, with The Revolution being disbanded after the Parade Tour, and the majority of 'Dream Factory' eventually transformed into Prince's solo album 'Sign O' The Times'.
This fan-edit is one of three parts which explore a scenario of 'Dream Factory', 'Crystal Ball', and 'Sign O' The Times' co-existing, with each album retaining its defining core that distinguishes them. 'Dream Factory' focuses on material that Prince recorded from December 1985 to June 1986 mainly with input from The Revolution, 'Sign O' The Times' comprises the solo recordings that Prince recorded afterwards and decided to carry over to the eventual 1987 album, and the retitled 'Welcome 2 The Crystal Ball' recovers most Camille tracks from the unreleased 'Crystal Ball' and the original 'Sign O' The Times' to a further developed 'Camille'.
This alternate version of the unreleased 'Dream Factory' imagines a version of the album that would have been released in October 1986 together with the announcement of The Revolution's dissolution, mainly focusing on recordings that feature the band's input and tracks that were originally removed from the album over the course of the process. Because a double album does not seem realistic in this scenario, some tracks have been edited to reduce the album to a single LP, while trying to maintain its original core and include as many songs as possible from former configurations. As Prince often added a new recording to complete an album (e.g. "U Got The Look" on 'Sign O' The Times', "Gett Off" on 'Diamonds And Pearls', and "Letitgo" on 'Come'), "Adonis and Bathsheba" has been included here, as the track is not known to have been intended for any other project and blends in well with the rest of our reimagined 'Dream Factory'. While the album mainly features songs with direct input from The Revolution, this alternative version tries to imagine a realistic evolution of the project under the influence of the band’s breakup.
Reworking this album was a extensive and complex process that was handled with a lot of care, attention to detail, and most importantly, the highest of respect to Prince, his artistry, and the integrity of his legacy.
Purple Legacy Music does not claim to "fix" or "improve" Prince's works. The idea of this fan project is to explore his legacy through an alternative approach to his creative output that discovers different scenarios of the so popular "what if's" of his career.
