(27 Apr 1973) RR7317B THE TRAGEDY OF THE STATELESS UGANDAN ASIANS
In 1972, 45,000 Asians were expelled from Uganda by
President Idi Amin. Thousands became stateless
refugees and came under the care of the United Nations
High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), which helped
to settle them in new homes elsewhere. For those with
skills this usually wasn't too difficult, but few countries
seem prepared to help the old and the sick. This report
shows conditions in transit camps in Europe, how two
families are adapting to their new life in the United
States and Switzerland and includes comments by the
UN High Commissioner, Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan
on the problems of resettlement.
