STORYLINE
Just hours after he announced that US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld would step down from his post, US President George W. Bush nominated on Wednesday, former CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) Director Robert Gates as Rumsfeld's replacement.
In an Oval Office ceremony, Bush called Gates a "patriot" and a "strategic thinker" with a transformational spirit.
He said Gates was a "man of integrity, candor and sound judgment," who understood that the "challenge of protecting our country is larger than any political party."
Bush said Gates "has a record of working with leaders on both sides of the aisle to strengthen" national security - a skill he'll need in plenty after both the House and Senate fell to the Democrats.
The president also praised Rumsfeld, Bush's longest-serving Cabinet member, saying, "America is safer and the world is more secure because of the leadership and the service of Don Rumsfeld."
