Algerian alley from past to present
“On the derelict Algeria alley behind Galatasaray High School in Beyoğlu; Urban transformation is achieved with the "French alley" project jointly developed by Afitas Production Company and Kultur University. With the project, buildings that have witnessed the change of the century as of the end of the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s and which have been discredited with several generations living different lives are restored; painted in pink and yellow, equipped with awnings. The paving stones are renewed, a special music system is installed for the whole area.
The Municipality of Paris sent the 100-year-old alley lamps, which work with gas, decorating the French alley. The French, who named the alley, whose ground stones were designed by working with architects from Paris, have very important traces in Beyoğlu.
Because the first coffeehouses, first hotels, first cinemas and theaters in Beyoğlu were established by the French in the 19th century. All of the buildings on the left side of the alley bear the signature of French contractor Marius Michel, who lived in Istanbul between 1890-1910 and built the Karaköy and Eminönü piers. In addition, the famous French painter Albert Mille lived in this region in the 1950s. There are cafes, restaurants and art centers offering different tastes on the alley, which aims to reflect the French culture. In addition, the alley, with its longing elements, keeps Istanbul's past alive with its past residents.
French alley was opened in 2003 as a result of a project jointly developed by Istanbul Kultur University and Afitas Production. During the 19th and 20th centuries, this alley behind Galatasaray High School was called Algeria alley, and at the end of the project developed in 2003, the alley was named French alley.”
It is stated that the first building on Istiklal alley was the French Consulate. In addition, French operators have opened numerous cafes and taverns in the region, and French cuisine has become a part of Ottoman and Istanbul culture with its numerous restaurants. This charming alley, which hosts its guests with an atmosphere where you can sit in one of the cafes during the daytime and have a hot drink accompanied by live music in the evenings and have good conversations, is actually known as the "French alley".
Algiers alley became French alley
“The shopkeepers of Istiklal alley do not want the alley that bears the name of France, which approved the Armenian bill. Istiklal alley tradesmen collect signatures and inform the Beyoğlu Municipality that they do not want the French alley name in the district.
Beyoğlu Municipality makes a decision to change the name of the alley. Beyoğlu Municipality fulfills the wishes of the İstiklal alley tradesmen. France, which gives credit to the so-called Armenian genocide allegations, is retaliated with the alley and the name is changed... The new name of the alley also carries a subtle message to France. Because the Algeria alley sign is hung in place of the French alley sign. In this way, France is reminded of the massacres it committed in Algeria. As a result of the deteriorating Turkish-French relations after France accepted a bill regarding the 1915 events, the name signs on the alley were removed, but the name remained on the business signs.
You can get away from the crowd of Istiklal alley and relax by taking the trams departing from Taksim and Tünel.
