When Indonesia assumed the leadership of G20 in late 2021, the world was already in bad shape, with COVID-19 still raging and the economy continuously in the doldrum.
But 2022 was even worse. As Indonesia began to steady its course in managing affairs in the G20, the war in Ukraine broke out in February, aggravating the already-deteriorating tension between Russia and the West. The war also further posed problems to the economy with the shipment of grains and fuels beginning to be impacted by the ongoing battle.
The G20 Leaders’ Summit in Bali this November will take place in the shadow of heightened tensions and what the leaders agree or fail to agree on at the resort island would certainly determine the course of events in the months -- if not years -- to come.
