Faro Punta Tuna lighthouse is off the normal tourist route, located on the East coast about 90 minutes drive outside of San Juan .
Several support buildings remain on the property, but nothing is open and this quickly becomes a self guided tour. The grounds are maintained and open to the public for free.
Originally operated in 1892, this prominent lighthouse provides a safe guidance to ships passing by the shallow, rocky water below and it provides protection for the Sargent reef immediately to the south.
The location offers 300 degree views along the beautiful coastline.
We are only able to peek inside the building through the windows, but the entire park around the lighthouse is maintained. The surrounding park is open, while the building interior is locked and closed up after damage from Hurricane Maria in September 2017.
