Rarely have I been allowed to see such a successful combination of old and new, of labyrinthine alleys bordered by elegant 16th-century Venetian buildings, and wide arteries, flanked by modern hotels with glass windows gleaming in the dazzling sun of Cretan noon.

I have seldom been seen to see such peaceful cohabitations between church towers and mosque minarets, which rise from the heights in squares shaded by palm trees and the indispensable bougainvillea.

Rethymno is a resort town with several tens of thousands of inhabitants, which generously shares it with visitors in areas not very strictly delimited:
1) new residential neighborhoods, developed inland, on fairly steep hills, with blocks of 3-4 floors painted in white, banal maybe to the point of exasperation, but which gets here, I do not know why a kind of bright aura;
2) the seafront, pedestrian after dark on the part between Iroon Square and the Old Venetian Port, where bar after bar lined up, tavern by tavern, all crowded in the evening by young people, because Rethymno is, among many others, a university city;
3) The Old Town, the fiefdom of tourists and shopkeepers with chic boutiques, unfortunately quite deserted in the virus year 2020, but eye-catching and full of picturesque corners screaming to be photographed and posted on Instagram;
4) beach, ah beach! incredibly long (and wide), another territory ceded by the locals to guests eager for sun and sea baths.

In Rethymno, the tourist has long sandy beaches equipped with all necessary facilities and a cliff that accompanies them all the way, hotels and guesthouses of all categories, taverns, cafes-bars, supermarkets and shops, but can also visit a fortress imposing and some interesting places of worship, and especially one can leave in the will of that relaxing atmosphere that the Greeks, in their wisdom and with the commercial ability that characterizes them, know how to create anywhere.
