Ever wondered who created G-code? Marc Cronin, from @GCodeTutor, discusses the origins and the future possibilities of the programming language.
G-code programming language was invented somewhere between 1958 and 1961 according to the official documents. The MIT was the first institution to start using it and experimenting with it. The programming language is one of the most ancient programming languages but despite his age is still one of the most utilized nowadays in a multitude of environments, including the majority of modern machine shops.
During the 1970s through the 1990s several CNC machine tool builders attempted to overcome capacity difficulties by standardizing on different machine controllers built by FANUC.
In modern days, controllers' differences and incompatibilities are not as troublesome as modern machines because modern machines operate using CAD/CAM. CAD/CAM machines can post to any version of G-code as the software is capable of dealing with the different variances that the machine manufacturers have added to the program over the years.
