There are a lot of “chopstick rules and taboos” in Japan so we’ll start with the two things you should absolutely not do when dining at a japanese restaurant.
Chopsticks Etiquette in Japan: What not to do:
1. Sticking chopsticks into a dish or a bowl of rice and leaving them vertically standing. That is really bad as it’s only done during funerals, so that’s a connection you should definitely avoid.
2. Another big mistake is to share food by passing it with your chopsticks, and having another person take it with theirs. This is also connected to funerals, so don’t do it.
3. Next taboo: Stabbing Food - Your chopsticks are not weapons or multi-functional tools, so don’t use them to stab or cut your food.
4. Hovering over Food - Try not to let your hand or chopsticks hover from dish to dish while you decide what to eat. Think carefully first, then take what you want.
5. Moving Your Bowl with chopsticks – well, that’s just rude - use your hands instead.
6. Placing Chopsticks Across a Bowl, especially when you’re not finished with the meals. It tells the chef (and everyone around you) that you no longer want your dish. Better place your chopsticks on the chopstick rests instead.
7. Also: Don't set your chopsticks down crossed, they should always be parallel.
8. Next mistake: Sucking or Chewing on Your Chopsticks - or letting them rest in your mouth while your hands are occupied. That is bad manners.
9. Don’t search for specific food items in a shared bowl. Pick a piece and stick with it. If there’s an extra pair of chopsticks for serving food, make use of it.
10. Rubbing disposable chopsticks together. - This is sometimes done to remove splinters from cheap chopsticks, so doing this is also indicating that you think the chopsticks you’ve been given are cheap. – even if they probably are cheap, let’s be honest here, but still don’t do it.
11. Don’t point at people or things with your chopsticks.
If you can’t memorize all these rules, just remember the first two and you’ll be more or less fine.
