Describing the 2022 Audi S3 as a version of the A3 model with more of everything sounds a bit trite, but it’s also accurate. Audi is as good as any other carmaker at taking a volume seller like the Audi A3, piling on the good gear and letting it loose to appeal to a cashed-up buyer profile. Enter the S3, the perfect stepping stone for those who don't need - or want - an RS3.
Available in both Audi’s usual sedan and Sportback (five-door hatch) the new S3 has more of everything: its engine outputs are higher, its handling has been tuned up, the luxury factor has been improved and connectivity sees some betterment, too. No surprises there, it’s pretty rare to hear of a car going backwards in any of those departments. But compared with the A3, the S3 offers more of the attributes that appeal to buyers with more cash to splash.
The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine has been tweaked and Australia gets the full-fat, Euro-spec engine, rather than the slightly detuned 'hot-weather' specification we’ve seen in this model in the past.
Until the even hotter RS3 turns up in showrooms sometime later in 2022 this car will represent peak A3-platform performance. Do you need anything more than an S3, though? David Morley attended the launch of the 2022 Audi S3 in Australia to see if he could answer that question for you.
