The western grebe mating call (advertising call) can be heard throughout this video. For years, I have wanted to get to Salmon Arm to witness the western grebes perform their various mating rituals. A few weeks back, I got my first opportunity to spend a couple of hours to see them. It was evening and I wasn't sure if they would be active or even around. For my short time there, their calls were constant and I got to witness this pair prepare to do their "rushing ceremony". This simultaneous run along the water can be performed by a courting couple or by two males competing to attract attention from the females. Before this couple began their run along the water, a third grebe poked its beak into the affair, spooked one of the birds, and triggered a solo run along the water, leaving everyone else involved looking a little confused. : )
