The Gorges du Tarn is a canyon formed by the river Tarn between the Causse Méjean and the Causse de Sauveterre, in southern France. The canyon, mainly located in the Lozère département, and partially in the Aveyron département Occitanie, is about 53 kilometres long and 400 m to 600 m deep.
The architecture of the gorges involves Mesozoic limestone plateaux downstream presenting sub-vertical cliffs. Faults like the Hauterive Fault explain the important water sources in the region of Sainte-Enimie and the more complex geology in the upstream part of the canyon. The climate is Mediterranean and the area is popular for hiking, kayaking, rock climbing and other outdoor activities.
Gorges Du Tarn is a 53-kilometer long canyon, naturally created by the flow of the Tarn river. The canyon is located in the southern part of France and is divided between two French departments. In essence, the most significant part of it lies within the Lozère département, while a smaller portion of it is placed in the Aveyron département.
Gorges Du Tarn is connecting the village of Quézac and the Le Rozier commune. The depth of the canyon varies from 400 m to 600 m through its various parts, and each one of them has a distinct set of touristic activities that can inspire and entertain you.
What is there to do along Gorges Du Tarn?
Tourism is the most developed industry in the region, which is why you surely won’t be bored once you arrive. Some of the most entertaining activities you can choose from in Gorges Du Tarn include:
Sightseeing activities – starting from the natural phenomena, and going to the numerous exceptional old castles around the canyon – Saint-Rome-de-Dolan, La Malène, Lacaze, and many more.
Hiking and rock climbing around the distinguished tourist roads, including “Route des Gorges du Tarn” – one of the very first specific tourist roads ever built in France.
Kayaking along the Tarn river.
Cultural tourism and exploring some of the traditional French villages spread around the canyon. The Saint-Chély-du-Tarn is an exceptional destination to consider in this regard.
Exploring the caves, cavities, and cave systems in the limestone plateau, part of which is Gorges Du Tarn.
Horseback riding around the off-beat paths of the canyon
Natural leisure activities such as picnicking, bird watching, photographing, etc.
Interacting with nature at its finest is never getting old. Gorges Du Tarn is an excellent example of how nature and civilization can co-exist without battling each other. On the contrary – that’s where they create the ultimate leisure destination for off-beat lovers from all over the world.
