After developing several 'pusher' aircraft, Geoffrey de Havilland developed the DH.5 for Airco (Aircraft Manufacturing Company) with a negative stagger of the two wings to improve the field of view for the pilot. The DH.5 was also one of the first British fighters to use the Constantinesco interrupter gear to allow a forward-firing machine gun to fire through the propeller arc
