Beverly Hills 90210 almost didn't happen…
Because a leading actress was being difficult….
No, not Shannen Doherty…
But rather Kristin Dattilo who was causing Aaron Spelling fits.
Spelling originally wanted Dattilo in the role of Brenda Walsh…
With the actressess' real-life younger brother Bryan Dattilo taking the part of Brandon…
But Kristin at age 19 was an up and coming acress
Having just appeared as Janie in the Aerosmith video Janie's Got a Gun.
So she had her eye instead on a promisting new NBC show called Hull High…
A one hour teen series,.. that was less soap and more musical comedy.
Didn't they see Cop Rock?
And besides, Kristin and Bryan were – like Brandon and Brenda – Midwestern transplants who suddenly found themselves in Beverly Hills as kids.
So Dattilo didn't think anyone would be interested in seeing her boring life play out on TV.
She turned down Spelling and 90210 to accept the role of D.J. on Hull High…
A show that lasted all of 9 episodes in the summer of 1990.
With a gaping hole in his casting plans, Spelling was ready to shelve the pilot script…
Until his daughter Tori came home after having just seen the film Heathers… co-starring Shannen Doherty…
Despite warnings from other casting directors… Doherty won the role…
but her screen test with Bryan Dattilo apparently didn't go well…
Becasue the part of brandon went instead to Jason Priestley.
Bryan Dattilo eventually logged more than 2000 episodes on Day of our Lives as Lucas.
And while Kristin eventually guest starred on 90210 as Melissa in season one's in One Man in a Baby.
Today she is maybe best known today as the pizza girl in the Friedns episode The One Where Ross Can't Flirt.
