This picture is the shape of a Chinese woman's foot in the tang period around 618-907. known as "lotus feet". It started as a way to imitate the dancing beauty of Buddhist goddesses. Later it spread among the middle and upper classes as a symbol of "status and beauty". The process of foot binding begins in childhood, and involves compressing and bending the feet so that they grow small and shaped like lotus flowers.
